Part 8 Spanish Civil War mini campaign (August-September 2020)

Part 8 — September 22nd 2020

Final battle for my campaign with my own made rules “From Warsaw to Berlin” addenda’s “To Madrid!”.

We are during the Spanish Civil War, I’ve think about a small military campaign as part of the major offensive and Battle of Brunete, July ’37.

8th short battle of Brunete it’s an assault scenario over entrenched positions.

The day its July 26th 1937, the last day of nationalists counteroffensive on Brunete. My mini campaign fade out. The initial objectives for nationalists are to resist at republicans attacks and then reply with a counteroffensive; the first part its fulfilled but for the second objective, losses are high and terrain conquests not so much. The nationalist player must win 6 of the 8 battles in that campaign so their order are fulfilled.

In a last attempt to break republicans morale and lines, nationalists generals ordered an all-out attack. Objective it’s the small city of Villanueva de Canada.

Nationalist forces are about 1400 men, 30 guns and mortars, and 13 tanks. The have huge air support by German 3 Ju52 bombers and 3 German Hs123 fighter bombers and also from 2 batteries of 150mm howitzers.

Republican force are composed only by 2 companies of ex CNT milicianos (anarchists) and a strong company with 8 BT-5 tanks also with 11 bunkers, extended minefields and a battery of 4 105mm Vickers guns.

The primary objective it’s to capture and free from enemies the city, and secondary objective it’s to capture the small bridge over the Roanes river.

The nationalist plan it’s to advance under the cover of some woods and then attack the city bit its well defended by minefields, a large force try to attack the town on its a flank, a small force threaten the front defensive line, a third group try to assault the bridge.

The main attack at the town it’s under the duty of Regulares de Tetuan (Moroccans troops).

The battle take place on a new randomized terrain.

at the left the main city defenses with barbed wire and extended minefields; in the center a view of Roanes river; on the right the location of the nationalist’s flank attack on the city
at the left the “carretera” that slow down in the city of Villanueva de Canada, main nationalist objective; on the right a small village of Tacoma
at the left the small bridge on the Roanes river and its defences, it’s the secondary objective for Franco’s forces; on the right and aerial view of the city defense lines

After Battle Report:

The last battle of the mini campaign of Brunete in the Spanish Civil War it’s over. This assault scenario make an hard duty on nationalist forces but heavy artillery and huge air support make the difference. The battle it’s another nationalists victory, 8th on eight battles. At the eve of 26th of July 1937 the town of Villlanueva de Canada was in nationalist hands. Franco’s forces have 195 casualties, 1 tank and 2 77mm guns destroyed but anarchists forces pay a painful toll, 200 casualties plus 75 pow and the loss of 8 tanks and 7 guns and the short down of a I-16 plane.
